PETER MATTHEW SAMET, MD
Peter Samet, M.D., has been affiliated with Spine Sports & Occupational Medicine since 1999. Dr. Samet is a Board certified physical medicine and rehabilitation doctor who currently has private practice locations in Ferndale and Southfield, Michigan. He is also a Brain Injury and Clinical Consultant at the Ann Arbor Rehabilitation Center in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
Dr. Samet received a Bachelor of Science in Microbiology from the University of Michigan in 1987 and earned his Doctor of Medicine from Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit with Distinction in Biomedical Research, where he also received a Distinguished Services Award.
Upon graduation from medical school, Dr. Samet completed an internship in Internal Medicine at Sinai Hospital of Detroit, where he continued with his residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. From 1995-1996, Dr. Samet was the Chief Resident at Sinai Hospital, Prior to entering private practice, Dr. Samet worked at Michigan Spine Institute in Waterford, Michigan; Polyclinic Associates in Southfield, Michigan; Downriver Rehabilitation Associates in Wyandotte, Michigan; and Great Lakes Rehabilitation Hospital in Southfield, Michigan, as the Director of Brain Injury and Neurotrauma Unit, Director of Orthotics and Prosthetics Clinic, and Director of Utilization Review and Quality Assurance Committee.
Dr. Samet is a member of the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and the Michigan Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. He is a Ringside Physician in boxing with the United States Junior Olympics Competition and the Golden Gloves Boxing Competition. He is a Peer Reviewer with the Michigan Peer Review Organization (MPRO) in Canton, Michigan, an Independent Medical Evaluation Expert with Qualified Medical Evaluators (QME) in Southfield, Michigan, and also a State of Michigan Social Security Disability Reviewer with Michigan Medical Evaluations in Warren, Michigan.
Dr.Samet holds hospital privileges at St. John Hospitals–Detroit, Oakland and Riverview, as well as St. Joseph Mercy Hospital–Pontiac and North Oakland Medical Center. Dr. Samet is certified Diplomate by the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and has a State of Michigan Physician License, State of Michigan Controlled Substance License, State of Michigan Boxing Commission Physician License, and is certified by the United States Drug Enforcement Agency. He is also board certified in electromyography (EMG) testing.
Dr. Samet has received research grants from the National Institutes of Health, American Heart Association and Wayne State University School of Medicine where his work on “Profiles and Outcomes and Patient’s Requiring Transfer Off the Rehab Unit” and “Predictive Value of Glasgow Coma Scale Motor Component on TBI Rehabilitation” appeared in the archives of PM&R (Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation). He frequently lectures on the pharmacology of traumatic brain injury, subacute treatment of multiple trauma, and the role of case managers in the long-term treatment of trauma.
